19. Our Turn
TP: What is your stage name? How did you get it?
Artist: Petey Green. I named myself Petey Green after watching the autobiography of a famous dj and entertainment figure from DC that has the same name
TP: What made you get into music? And who/what were some of your inspirations?
Artist if the week: I’ve been into music since I was about 5, playing piano and singing in the church choir. Some of my early inspirations were Marvin Gaye, Earth Wind and Fire etc. A lot of Soul Music, later on I got into some Biggie Smalls Tupac Nas Ugk Three Six
Mafia and Scarface. Along with Devin The Dude. I really love southern soul influenced hip hop.
TP: So what you think about this industry so far?
Artist: The industry is forever changing. One thing that doesnt change is the snakes and fakes. The industry is cool if you learn the rules and stay grounded with good people around you that got the same hustle and drive as you have.
TP: If you could what are some of the things you would change about the music industry?
Artist: I would change it to ensure that only talented artists get discovered and make the big bucks.
TP: Honestly how do you feel DJs are being treated? How you think they should be treated?
Artist: Im not sure really how dj’s get treated since I’m not one. I just know that they are the cornerstone of what we do as artists in the hip hop game. They are the reason we get played. I wish dj’s had more discretion on who they want to play on the radio and in the clubs. And make sure you pay your damn dj’s !
TP: Who are some of the people you would like to work with whether mainstream or independent (i.e. DJs, Producers, Artist, etc)?
Artist: I would love to work with Big K.R.I.T , Bun B, Nas, Curren$y, and any of the r&b soul legends.
TP: What is something unique about you or your music profession that others wouldn’t know by reading this or listening to your music?
Artist: Me and E.Waters (my partner from P-N-E) are cousins. I think thats why our chemistry is so organic in our music and on stage.
TP: where you see yourself in the next 3-5 years?
Artist: In 3 to 5 years i see myself owning my own recording studio in DC. Probably married with kids and still chopping up funky tunes
TP: What are some of the projects you working on?
Artist: We are currently set to release the mixtape “Since Ceana” online in another week or so (by P-N-E) we also have an album we are wrapping up entitled “The Catalina Winemixer Soundtrack” which is our debut album as a group. I also have a solo mixtape i have just started to put together tentatively titled “The Greenhouse”
TP: Do you have any advice you want to give Artist just starting out?
Artist: Stay motivated, put yourself out there with no apologies and keep good hardworking people around you who you trust.
TP: Where can the Reader read more about you and hear your music?
Artist: twitter.com/peteygreen211, twitter.com/waters_world, youtube.com/northstarunlimited, youtube.com/ewatersworld,facebook.com/peteygreen, datpiff.com (search for petey green)
TP: Do you have any shout outs? Shouts out to my partner Michael Harry, Northstar Unlimited Ent. whole staff, my man Jamal “Ghost” Turner, the whole DMV music scene and girls who smoke mary jane and eat plantains. Im gone. Thanks for having me.
